Algunos esperan hasta el final que Mariana sea perdonada, pero la tragedia está servida y tiene todos los ingredientes clásicos: amor, juventud, ideales de libertad y muerte.Lorca escribió Mariana Pinedaentre 1923 y 1925, y fue representada por primera vez en 1927.
