Come possiamo pensare l'estetica musicale nel contesto culturale del secolo che le ha dato i natali, il Settecento? Il libro che il lettore ha sotto gli occhi risponde al quesito indicando già nel titolo il tema della narrazione: la sensibilità. Il viaggio nella sensibilità musicale delle donne e degli uomini del Settecento ha tre tappe: vita musicale, ossia il consumo di musica nelle capitali italiane ed europee del Settecento; generi letterari, i testi che nel secolo narrano l'arte dei suoni; discorso musicale, i concetti che la cultura del Settecento ha posto alla base di ciò che oggi chiamiamo "estetica della musica". Lungo questo triplice percorso il lettore vedrà via via disegnarsi il volto specifico dell'estetica musicale del XVIII secolo, dissimile sia dalle forme della cultura musicale delle epoche precedenti (Antichità, Medioevo, Rinascimento, Età barocca) sia dalle forme della cultura musicale posteriore (Ottocento e Novecento).
