Da Cicerone a Rousseau, da Tommaso d'Aquino a Fichte, da Croce a Habermas, fino a Charles Taylor, storicamente il linguaggio del patriottismo è stato usato per combattere la tirannide, il dispotismo, l'oppressione e la corruzione; il linguaggio del nazionalismo per combattere la contaminazione, l'eterogeneità e l'impurità culturale (o etnica o religiosa) e per soffocare il conflitto politico e sociale. Una riflessione aggiornata sulla validità dell'importante distinzione tra patriottismo e nazionalismo.
