Il termine «maieutica» si è introdotto nell'uso contemporaneo, dalla filosofia con i bambini alla politica, per sottolineare che si può partorire anche intellettualmente. Quando è iniziato l'accostamento, nella sfera educativa, fra parto e idee? Le origini potrebbero risalire al mito greco, che associava con più agio il "partorire con la testa" agli uomini. La formula più nota è quella creata da Socrate-maestro, citato dal suo allievo Platone. Solo da Platone? Ripercorrendo le origini e ammettendo un'esigenza contemporanea di riflettere sul dialogo, viene da chiedersi quanto la dialogicità oggi sia più efficace di quella socratica, che forse, per dirla con Umberto Eco, cercava di sfinire l'interlocutore a favore delle proprie convinzioni.
