Das Buch widmet sich der Frage nach dem kulturellen und institutionalisierten Verhältnis der Tschechen zu den Slowaken bzw. der Böhmen und Mähren zur Slowakei auf staatlicher Ebene. Schließlich bestand die tschechoslowakische Staatlichkeit den größten Teil des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie wurde auf den Ruinen des "österreichisch-ungarischen Völkergefängnisses" gegründet, das im Namen der Verwirklichung des Dogmas der nationalen Selbstbestimmung aufgelöst worden war. Dies führte zur Gründung der Tschechoslowakei, in der nach der vorherrschenden Ideologie die staatsbildende Nation die Tschechoslowaken waren, eine Synthese aus den Tschechen, die in der mitteleuropäischen Geschichte eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt hatten, und den Slowaken, die viele Jahrhunderte lang unter magyarischer Herrschaft gestanden hatten.
